Location: The village of Broughton lies about three miles west of Cockermouth. The Methodist Church is on the edge of the village near the school on Moor Road, Great Broughton, postcode CA13 0YR.
Wesleyan Methodists first began to meet in Great Broughton, as the village is more properly known, around 1840. They first met in Trough House, then Rock House, both houses still occupied by members of the church today.
In 1846 a chapel was finally opened. This chapel proved too small, so a new chapel and Sunday School were built on land nearby in 1884. The new chapel, still in use, was rumoured to have been built on the old Broughton Cockpit.
In 1953 the members of this church and the ex-Primitive Methodists at Little Broughton combined congregations, meeting for worship in alternate buildings. By the end of 1970 they agreed to formally combine, holding worship at the Great Broughton site.
